Job Introduction

Are you reliable, proactive, and committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment? East Durham College is looking for a dedicated Caretaker with Security Responsibilities to join our Estates team.

About the Role:

You’ll play a key role in ensuring the safety, security, and upkeep of our Peterlee campus. From opening and securing buildings to carrying out routine maintenance and responding to emergencies, this is a varied and rewarding position. Duties include:

• Acting as primary keyholder and monitoring CCTV/alarm systems.
• Conducting security patrols and responding to incidents.
• Performing minor repairs, general maintenance, and supporting room setups.
• Maintaining grounds and external areas, including seasonal tasks.
• Supporting health & safety compliance and emergency procedures.

Essential Requirements:

• SIA licence (or willingness to obtain).
• GCSE standard education (Maths & English).
• Willingness to undertake First Aid training.
• Experience in caretaking, site management, or security.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Flexibility to work shifts, including evenings/weekends.
• Physically fit for manual handling and outdoor work.
• Awareness of Health & Safety and safeguarding principles.

Desirable:

• Full UK driving licence and/or access to a vehicle.
• Knowledge of building maintenance and security operations.
